A D-U-N-S number is a unique business identifier in Dun & Bradstreet’s database. Global buyers, some Indian corporates, logistics firms and tender portals treat it as a KYC field: they want one number they can look up, not a stack of visiting cards.
It is not a licence from GSTN, MCA or the Noida Authority. You can run a lawful shop without DUNS. You may still lose a vendor slot if the other party’s form will not submit without it. That commercial filter is why this page exists.

Why this document is needed
Dun & Bradstreet built D-U-N-S so counterparties can tell one legal entity from another with a similar name. Export teams and large procurement desks already live in that database. They ask you to join it rather than invent a new ID.
On many vendor portals the field is mandatory. Until it is filled, purchase, onboarding or a foreign KYC pack stays open. That delay is operational, not a court order.
DUNS does not replace GSTIN, Udyam, IEC or incorporation. Those answer tax, MSME class, customs and company law. DUNS answers “which D&B record is this firm?”

- Export, freight and some government-linked portals that store D&B against your name

Problems that can come up
- The form can sit on “DUNS required” even when PAN, GST and cancelled cheque are ready.
- A foreign buyer’s compliance team may refuse to start credit checks until a D-U-N-S exists.
- You are not automatically illegal for lacking DUNS. You can still miss tenders and rate contracts that insist on it.
- A number issued to the wrong entity (branch vs parent) can fail a later audit. Matching the legal name matters.
