The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) grants Startup India recognition if the entity meets eligibility then in force. We coordinate the filing. We do not issue recognition ourselves.

DPIIT recognition is how an eligible private limited company, partnership or LLP is recorded as a “startup” under the Startup India framework. It is a status on DPIIT’s system, not incorporation, not GST, not a funding guarantee.
Founders in Noida and Ghaziabad usually come to it because a grant, incubator, tender or tax-related form (where the law still ties a benefit to recognition) asks for the DPIIT certificate or ID. If you are not using those routes, many companies operate without it.

Why this document is needed
Recognition is the government’s way of tagging entities that meet age, turnover, innovation and other tests published for Startup India. Those tests are updated. We file against the live form, not against a blog from last year.
Several scheme portals will not let you submit without a recognition number. That is a gate, not a quality score of your product.
Investors sometimes ask for it as a hygiene check. They still do their own diligence. Recognition is not a substitute for a cap table or revenue.
What it is used for
- Startup India and related scheme applications that list DPIIT recognition as mandatory
- Incubator, grant or challenge forms that upload the recognition letter
- Buyer or tender checklists that treat recognised startups as a separate category
- Keeping the Startup India profile current if you already qualify and only need a filing refresh
Problems that can come up
- A scheme that requires recognition will not treat you as eligible until DPIIT has granted it (or while an application is still pending, their status banner controls).
- Operating a company without DPIIT status is normal. You are not “illegal” for skipping it if you are not claiming those benefits.
- If you do not meet innovation / age / turnover rules, filing anyway can end in rejection. We do not stretch eligibility.
- Recognition can later be cancelled if DPIIT finds the entity no longer fits. That is their call.
